Arboreal Wildlife Bridge
Connecting arboreal habitats
Our sister company Animex has developed an arboreal wildlife bridge to re-connect isolated habitats for protected arboreal species such as Hazel Dormice or Red Squirrels. With the combination of Ecosupport's ecological expertise and Animex's engineering skills, we can provide the best solution for developers and wildlife alike.
If a development scheme may result in the disconnection of woodland habitat, an Animex Wildlife Bridge may be a suitable approach for mitigation on site. In addition, the bridge can provide site enhancement by re-connecting woodland on site to previously isolated patches in surrounding areas, such as across a road. If you think the Animex Wildlife Bridge may be suitable for your site, please Speak to a Wildlife Bridge Advisor.
The bridge was developed in conjunction with the People's Trust for Endangered Species, based on a Japanese design and was successfully trialled with Hazel Dormice and Red Squirrels on the Isle of Wight. During monitoring with camera traps both species were found using the bridge to cross between the isolated habitats, as shown below.
Research on this successful design has been presented Internationally including at: Infra Eco Network Europe 2018, International Conference on Ecology and Transportation 2017 and the National Dormouse Conference 2016 & 2019

Bespoke & adaptable design
The bridge has been designed to be adaptable and can be installed in multiple ways to find the perfect fit at minimal cost for every site. The bridge can be built to stand alone or be retrospectively fitted into another structure such as a bridge or underpass and comes with a lifetime guarantee!
Our team wrote the Best Practice Guidelines in collaboration with the People's Trust for Endangered Species for installing arboreal bridges for dormice. We are experts and can design a bespoke mitigation bridge for your project.
